About the Metals We Use

Gold-filled is composed of a solid layer of gold bonded with heat and pressure to a brass core.It wears like solid gold because its outer surface is solid gold which is permanently fused to the brass "filling" inside and won't chip or flake. Gold-filled items are 50 to 100,000 times thicker than regular gold plating and 25,000 times thicker than heavy gold electroplate. In the USA the quality of gold filled is defined by the Federal Trade Commission . If the gold layer is 12 kt or higher the minimum layer of karat gold in an item stamped GF must equal at least 1/20 (5%) the weight of the total item.

Gold-filled items, even with daily wear, can last many years but will eventually wear through. However, it is an economical and affordable way to enjoy the rich look of gold for many years. Occasional cleaning by rubbing the piece of jewelry gently with a soft polishing cloth is recommended but not necessary.

Oxidized Sterling Silver is sterling silver that has been chemically and intentionally oxidized and blackened. Sterling silver has traditionally been kept as bright and shiny as possible. However, when oxidized, it has a distinctively smoky appearance. It is dull rather than shiny and may come in black or various shades of gray. Occasional cleaning by rubbing the piece of jewelry gently with a soft polishing cloth is recommended but not necessary.Sterling silver is a precious metal composed, by law, of 92.5% of pure silver and 7.5% of other metals, usually copper.Fine silver (99.9% pure) is generally too soft for jewelry; therefore, the silver is usually alloyed with copper to give it strength while preserving the ductility and beauty of the precious metal. Occasional cleaning by rubbing the piece of jewelry gently with a soft polishing cloth will help maintain the original shine.

Brass is an alloy of 85% copper and 15% zinc. It is an economical way to get the look of gold for a fraction of the price. To maintain the shine and luster, rub the jewelry gently with a polishing cloth. Or leave it to get a rich patina and character over time
